The lung and the brain: a dangerous cross-talk
نویسندگان
چکیده
Brain or lung injury or both are frequent causes of admission to intensive care units and are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Mechanical ventilation, which is commonly used in the management of these critically ill patients, can induce an inflammatory response, which may be involved in distal organ failure. Thus, there may be a complex crosstalk between the lungs and other organs, including the brain. Interestingly, survivors from acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome frequently have some cognitive deterioration at hospital discharge. Such neurologic dysfunction might be a secondary marker of injury and the neuroanatomical substrate for downstream impairment of other organs. Brainlung interactions have received little attention in the literature, but recent evidence suggests that both the lungs and brain can promote inflammation through common mediators. The present commentary discusses the main physiological issues related to brain-lung interactions.

Causes of family refusal for organ donation in brain-dead cases, A Narrative Review
Introduction: One of the most important barriers to organ transplantation and the consequent mortality of people on the waiting list for transplants in most countries is family refusal. As a result, recognizing the effective factors in family consent will provide a bridge to increase the rate of supply of organs needed for transplantation. Due to the various factors affecting organ donation, in...
متن کامل18FDG PET/CT in pulmonary carcinosarcoma and brain metastasis
Carcinosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that is composed of a mixture of sarcomatous and carcinomatous elements. Pulmonary carcinosarcoma has a 25% five-year survival rate with a prognosis poorer than other non-small cell lung carcinomas. Herein, we report a case of pulmonary carcinosarcoma and its 18F-FDG PET/CT findings. A 61-year-old male patient presented with brain symptoms, including hea...

Brain and/or lung injury is the most frequent cause of admission to critical care units and patients in this setting frequently develop multiple organ dysfunction with high rates of morbidity and mortality. متن کاملDetection of lung cancer using CT images based on novel PSO clustering
Lung cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases that cause a large number of deaths. Early detection and analysis can be very helpful for successful treatment. Image segmentation plays a key role in the early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer. K-means algorithm and classic PSO clustering are the most common methods for segmentation that have poor outputs. In t...

Background and purpose: Resveratrol (RSV) is a naturally existing polyphenolic compound abundantly found in grapes and several plants. It has potent free radical scavenger and antioxidative properties with significant effects in reducing oxidative damage. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to PQ induced tissue damage. In this study, the protective effect of RSV was invest...
